Basic Skills Skating Lessons

Sylvania Tam-O-Shanter Learn to Skate programs are committed to providing skaters, ages 3 through adult with the basic ice skating skills that are necessary to skate safely and competently, whether for figure skating, ice hockey or recreation. The Learn to Skate program follows the Learn to Skate USA curriculum. Fee includes Learn to Skate USA membership.

BASIC SKILLS (AGES 6 & UP)

Program Options:

  • Beginner (no experience required)
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced

The first stage of skills forms a strong foundation for your skaters to explore the world of skating. All will progress at their own pace working toward mastering each skill. Basic Skills will harness those skills as agility, balance, coordination and speed become the main focus of this curriculum. Basic Skills teaches the fundamentals of ice skating and provides the best foundation for figure skating, hockey, and speedskating.

* Beginner (Basic 1 and 2) – Discover, Learn and Play: These introductory levels allow new skaters with no prior skating experience to build confidence while learning to skate.

* Intermediate (Basic 3-6) – FUNdamentals: These levels develop all of the fundamental skating skills on the ice. Focus is on learning the ABCs of basic athleticism: agility, balance, coordination and speed.

* Advanced - Offers skaters an affordable, comprehensive package program in a safe and supportive group training environment. Skaters will learn proper skill development and training techniques while sampling different skating opportunities and fine-tuning their fundamental skating skills. Advanced offers skaters an affordable, comprehensive package program in a safe and supportive group training environment. Skaters will learn proper skill development and training techniques while sampling different skating opportunities and fine-tuning their fundamental skating skills.

Upon completion of these levels, skaters will be able to confidently advance to more specialized areas of skating.

It is recommended (not required) that you complete a session of Snowplow Sam, Pre-Hockey, and/or Basic Skills (or masters gliding and stopping) prior to registering for Learn 2 Play Hockey.
